Poison Gas

A major breaking story, January 1, 1989 in the New York Times by Stephen Engelberg and Michael Gordon reports on a vast chemical plant shipped by West Germany to Libya. American analysts assert that it is the largest chemical weapons factory in the third world, capable of producing between 22,000 and 84,000 pounds of mustard gas and nerve agent daily. They say that the United States has concluded that West German companies indeed played a central role in designing these facilities. West German President Helmut Kohl claims his country does not have effective laws to prosecute companies exporting material and expertise needed for chemical weapons (Why not?).

They quote the former Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Robert M. Gates (nominated to be Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bush) who confirms this, and adds that the plant was built with assistance from companies of a “dozen other nations, East and West.”

The NY-TIMES described this chemical plant as part of an industrial park that also includes an elaborate metallurgical works by the Japan Steel Works Co., which has the equipment needed to make bombs and shell casings.

Apparently our U.S. intelligence agencies had accumulated this information several years ago. We observed its use by Iraq against Iran but regretfully, no Western country spoke out forcefully against its use. We knew that Syria and Iraq were also receiving gas and germ warfare plants from Germany and other nations. Both Syria and Iraq are far in advance of Libya in this science.

In 1984 Jonathan Pollard, then a civilian analyst in the Naval Intelligence Terror Alert Unit spotted this information. He asked his superiors why this data wasn’t being forwarded to our ally Israel. He was told that this was none of his concern, and besides, “Jews are too sensitive about gas.” Although President Ronald Reagan had signed a 1983 M.O.U. (Memorandum of Understanding) to exchange this sort of vital security information with Israel, certain individuals in the Administration decided to keep Israel in the dark. Pollard eventually gave this information to Israel, accepting the risk of imprisonment. He was caught and sentenced to life in prison with no parole after an in-camera hearing (no trial). Pollard has been in solitary confinement going on four years.

The disingenuous statements of amazement (that poison gas is now in the Middle East Muslim countries) now coming out of bureaucratic Washington is a macabre joke. Considerable energies have been expended to not inform the public years ago.

Jonathan Pollard is being kept in the deep freeze because he carried out the orders and wishes of the President and Congress. Others, being protected by the old boy system, not only knew that Israel was being made vulnerable by gas coming into the Middle East, but may have been gratified by it. There are two men who thought that they knew better and have thrust Israel and perhaps the entire Middle East into a position where war could break out using germ and gas missiles for which the only possible defense would be nuclear.

One man most certainly has most of the answers, IF Congress would only use its subpoena powers. That man is former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. Everything worth knowing flowed through the Department of Defense and across his desk, including all intelligence and which contractors received military orders through the Pentagon. No one has yet laid the Pentagon procurement scandal at his door. This extraordinary misappropriation of funds occurred during his watch and he appears to have escaped responsibility.

It was Caspar Weinberger who requested a death sentence for Pollard but remained relatively uninterested and silent about the Walkers who spied for 17 years for the Soviets, a declared enemy.

Why was Weinberger so insistent that Jonathan Pollard be silenced even to the degree of keeping him in solitary confinement? What role did Edward Meese play as head of the Justice Department? J. Michael Quinlan, head of the Bureau of Prisons told a group of Christian clergy on August 29, that Meese was behind the prosecution, sentencing and treatment of the Pollards from day one. Why was Anne Pollard, who had no access or knowledge of security information sentenced to 2 concurrent 5 year terms with no parole, even though the judge knew she had a serious medical condition which has resulted in her losing sixty pounds, enduring constant pain and deterioration in jail?

There is the appearance that a second covert foreign policy was being shaped in the Middle East. Like keeping a second set of books, the hidden agenda called for the defeat of Israel by a combination of Arab and Muslim forces using gas and germ warfare carried into Israel by various long range missiles.

The (U.S.) Congress has remained conspicuously silent on this issue but the mounting evidence of collusion, bypassing Congress and a secret foreign policy, may force them to mount an investigation.

About the Author

Manny Winston, my late husband, flew from Chicago to Israel to volunteer during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. He arrived with US secretary of state Henry Kissinger’s first ceasefire on October 21; I followed on October 30th.

Manny was picking grapefruit at Kibbutz Dalia when his friend, the artists, Sol Baskin called with a permit to enter the war zone. They drove to meet Gen. Ariel “Arik” Sharon at the Suez Canal. “Shalom” Baskin was part of the Mahal volunteers from America to the IDF, and a commissioned officer in Mahal. He was Arik’s commanding officer during the 1948 War of Independence, and they remained friends.

Manny brought his two Leica cameras and photographed an outstanding photo exposé on October 29 and 30. He saw and smelled the “killing fields” He met with Sharon, the young soldiers who had survived the destroyed tanks and he saw how the blown tank turret, flipped upside down destroyed the lives of those brave souls inside.

Manny did see these effects and, because he was a true Renaissance man, a graphic thinker who was a painter, sculptor and political analyst, he envisioned a solution to the weak point of the tank. He described a technique to conquer that weakness to Sharon, who sent him to Maj.-Gen. Israel Tal, the developer of the famed Merkava tank.

Manny’s “leap of imagination” created what became “Blazer” or “Reactive” Armor. He designed rectangles of hollow metal boxes with an explosive charge inside. These ‘so-called’ “skirts” were placed around the neck of the tank turret so that when hit, the explosive charge therein would push the incoming ballistic missile out, thereby saving the tank and its crew. This was compatible with the primary goal of Gen. Tal’s Merkava tanks: Defense of the Tank Crew.

That, along with speed, maneuverability, effective shooting and protection against damaging desert sand, were what made the Merkava “The Tank a Jewish Mother Would Love,” as Manny called it.

He also designed a better bridge for crossing the Canal – easier to carry and assemble, and less susceptible to the huge holes the tanks had already created on the day’s existing bridge.

Manny continued to submit creative concepts for defense and offense to Israel’s military industries – for which he received his Israeli citizenship and security clearance. Many of his concepts and ideas were adopted throughout the years. He never asked for credit or remuneration but even today, I see his concepts being used, either in action or in military articles. Someday I hope to publish the “WINSTON DEFENSE DESIGNS,” either online or in a book – a very big book, with his original drawings.

The Yom Kippur War was a seminal turning point in Israel’s history. We did win. It was a miracle, given the forces mounted against us, in number and backed up the Soviet Union.

We have 40 mounted color photographs by Emanuel A. Winston, ready to show at a traveling or permanent exhibition, which will enhance our appreciation of what our men and generals went through and achieved.

The Yom Kippur War was also a seminal turning point in the lives of the Winston family. It was our second trip to Israel. We had tried to make Aliyah in 1962 but didn’t succeed. I made Aliyah on November 7, 1979. Manny died on June 12, 2012, and is now buried on the Mount of Olives.

I sold the home he built in Highland Park, Illinois, in August 2012, and brought his manuscripts and published papers, to the home I built in Israel in 1992. Two of our sons and their families also live in the Jewish state.

My heartfelt message for you, the reader, is to invite all my friends, family and Internet friends to come to Israel. This is where a Jew can be truly Jewish.
