ETERNAL JERUSALEM Originally Published: March 16, 1997

The following article: ETERNAL JERUSALEM was published March 16, 1997 – number 2 in our re-publishing of many of our articles defending Jerusalem as the Eternal, Golden Capital of the Jewish People given by G-d in perpetuity.

Jews – Christians – Muslims. Each claims a special proprietary relationship with Jerusalem. But the contest over Jerusalem is merely a microcosm of the centuries old competition that is endemic to the Middle East and underlies much of today’s conflict. Each challenging order submits their claim as if it supersedes that of all others, insisting conquest justifies their demand which of course, it doesn’t. The reader must understand that this region of the world breeds feuds that can last hundreds of not thousands of years.

Does it matter who claims Jerusalem as long as its true owners once again have full possession? The Jews are living in Jerusalem under an Israeli government, with their own laws, once again controlling their own destiny. Unlike any other city in the region, anyone may worship whatever G-D they are disposed to follow…or not worship at all. Like any city in America, you must merely obey the law, pay your taxes and you are pretty much free to do as you please.

However, there is a challenge hanging over the city which comes primarily from two old and dedicated enemies of the Jews. The challenge comes in two parts but they are ostensibly bound into one. The Muslims representing Arab nations, Arab Palestinians and Islam say that Jerusalem is their third holiest city and therefore they have a right to half (if not all) as their capitol. The Vatican demands that Jerusalem be “internationalized” because three religions have a vital interest in the city and all must be free to worship there.

This last position is somewhat strange since historical records illustrate that when the city of Jerusalem was in the hands of either Islam or Christianity, both denied each other freedom of worship and both denied the Jews that right. It was only recently when the Jews again had control of the city that all religions were free to worship as they wished at the sites each consider holy. Both have used their economic power and vast numbers to press the nations of the world into their camp.

You, the reader should be interested in the veracity of these claims. Let us review the history which led up to today’s claims on Jerusalem:
In 1916 the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, a Welsh Liberal appreciated liberating oppressed peoples from the rotting Ottoman Empire. He also found emotionally appealing the Zionist dream of restoring Jews to their ancient homeland. In 1917 he assisted in the British declaration of intent, the Balfour Declaration to establish a “National Homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine.” In 1918 the British and French liberated the region from 500 years of Turkish rule under the Ottoman Empire.

In 1919 Emir Faisal and Chaim Weizmann signed an agreement welcoming the return of the Jews to their “Homeland” in exchange for Jewish assistance to the Arabs at the Versailles Conference of 1919 and after, to get recognition for the newly created “Arab homelands”. The Versailles Treaty arbitrarily established the boundaries of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon, the Persian Gulf States, now 5.5 million square miles.

The League of Nations ratified the Balfour Declaration in 1920 at an international Conference in San Remo, Italy.  That San Remo Treaty has NEVER BEEN ABROGATED. It was also ratified by a U.S. Joint Congressional Resolution of 1922.

Emir Faisal had been named King of Syria, but when the French took over the mandate for Syria, they ejected Faisal. The British then named Faisal King of Iraq. To further placate the Arabs, then Colonial Secretary Winston Churchill cut away 76.5% of Palestine, 35,000 square
miles – creating a brand new Arab entity, Trans-Jordan, and installed Faisal’s brother, a Hashemite from Saudi Arabia, Abdullah, as Emir.

The British continued to hold the Palestinian Mandate over the land west of the Jordan (approximately 23% of the original Mandate) until 1947 when the United Nations partitioned this land between the Jews and the Arabs. The Jews accepted the partition; the Arab nations refused. Upon the formal announcement that Israel had proclaimed itself a nation, trained armies from seven Arab countries attacked the fledgling Jewish State proclaiming a war of total elimination for the glory of Islam.

Miraculously the Jews won.

However, the final cease fire left the Jordanians in control of the two territories of Judea and Samaria which they renamed the West Bank. Jordan was now also in control of the North, East and South sectors of Jerusalem, including the Old City with the Temple Mount and Western Wall. The Jews won control over the western enclave of Jerusalem. With the exception of Great Britain and Pakistan, all the other nations, including the Arab countries, refused to recognize Jordan’s conquest and sovereignty. Jordan held most of Jerusalem and its holy sites for 19 years, until Egypt and Syria moved against Israel in May 1967. The Israelis countered with a pre-emptive air strike. Israel warned the Jordanians to stay out of the war but King Hussein, misled by erroneous Egyptian proclamations of great victory, sent in his troops. The result: the Israelis defeated all the Arab armies liberating the rest of Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Gaza and the Golan Heights.

During those 19 years that the Jordanian Muslims were in control, neither they nor any other Arab nations made the claim that Jerusalem was Islam’s third holiest city. Consistent with the neglect of centuries past, few, if any, Muslim religious leaders sojourned from Amman, Jordan to Jerusalem. In fact, there were no recorded visits of religious leaders coming from Mecca, Medinah, Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, etc., to pay homage to what they now claim is the third holiest city of Islam. Jerusalem simply was not on the list of cities a True (Muslim) Believer was required to visit. When on a journey elsewhere and if a Muslim visited Jerusalem it was called a ‘ziara’ or visit and a Muslim accrued no special honor. Whereas when a Muslim, set out to visit Mecca it was called a ‘haj’ or holy pilgrimage, gaining a great honor for one’s afterlife and the title ‘Haj” added to one’s name. To the Jordanians and the rest of Islam, Jerusalem was not a required place to visit or to hold in holy veneration.

The Jordanians, while in control of Jerusalem, made no attempt to maintain the city. Streets were often merely open sewers – refuse piled up against its ancient walls. The holy sites of Christians and Jews were desecrated. While the Jordanians were somewhat restrained in their actions against the Church due to the powerful influence of Christianity in the free world, the Jews had no such protection. Fifty-eight synagogues were destroyed – often turned into stables. The headstones from Jewish cemeteries were used as splash plates in urinals for Jordanian soldiers and to pave roads. A mosque was built over the graves. Later, when the Jews freed the city those headstones were recovered and replaced in the cemeteries as best as they could.
While this desecration was well-known to the Christian world and all the western nations, none protested. Jerusalem was again being ravaged and no one cared – except the Jews.

Only after 1967 did the Arab strategists declare Jerusalem Islam’s third holiest city. This fabrication was quickly accepted in the Christian West which had by then firmly grasped the profitable handles of appeasement. Whether as individual nations or through the U.N., the Arabs could do no wrong. The opportunity to receive oil or sell arms made the civilized world one vast whorehouse of acquiescence. Complying with the idea that Jerusalem was part of the baggage of Islam was a small request, particularly when compared with the U.N. genuflecting toward the oil of Saudi Arabia that had preceded this. The revisionists of Arab history began in earnest as they hurriedly constructed a lengthy history for the indigenous Arab population, renamed Palestinians.

As a relevant aside, I was amused as the valiant Peter Arnett of CNN broadcast on January 26, l99l that he was in Najeb, Iraq covering bomb damage in what the Iraqi religious leaders claimed was the “Third holiest city after Mecca and Medina” and very likely a most accurate claim.

The city of Jerusalem was for the Jews the mystical place of G-D’s presence on earth. It was for the Jews the only Capitol they would ever have or want. While other religions chose other cities for their capitols, i.e. Rome, Mecca, etc. for their 2000 years of exile, the Jews thought only of Jerusalem as the city of their soul. Clearly, the linkage called Jerusalem.

Perhaps it was this mystical attraction for the Jews that drew others to try and capture its elusive spirit. Located in rugged terrain, with no lure of valuable minerals (gold or precious stones), Jerusalem was never a likely crossroad for significant commerce. But, they all came to conquer and wrest the city from the Jews: Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Franks, Saracens, Turks, Christians crusading in the name of Jesus; Muslims carrying the flag of Islam. All came; all slaughtered each other; and all slaughtered the Jews in the name of their gods or quest. Jerusalem was their booty as they carried the earthly riches of the Hebrew Temple back to their respective cities. One cannot forget the monument to Titus engraved with a mighty procession of captured Jewish slaves carrying the gold Menorah and other Temple objects to honor the victorious emperor of Rome. Conquering Jerusalem was a symbol of earthly power and the presumption that their gods had blessed them.

Jerusalem, while it has numerous places of worship such as Al Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, etc., their presence as holy sites is linked only to their individual buildings dedicated to a specific worship. The concept that Jerusalem, the city, also belongs to them is a spurious claim not supported by fact or history.

In times past, one implored the gods to assist in all sorts of matters, including the provision of a life after death. Gods were entreated with all sorts of blandishments i.e. human sacrifice, starvation, large opulent buildings, whipping one’s body, singing and dancing in erotic ceremonials. Conquerors occasionally ate their enemies to absorb their earthly power and that of their gods.

And then G-D came to the Hebrews with a promise which cast doubt on the idol worship of man. The Hebrews accepted One G-D which, in effect, denied the existence of all other deities.

This G-d was invisible and all one had to do was to follow His Commandments and 613 Injunctions (“mitzvot” or good deeds) and it was perceived you received the guarantee that mankind had always been seeking, namely a life after death. Instead of accepting the One G-D and joining the Jews, there followed a great scrambling to enjoy the fruits the new G-D offered – but not to join the Jews and their tedious rules for living. Each wanted their own religious pathway directly to the ear of G-D and the Jews were perceived as merely standing in the way. An on-going effort continues to this day, wherein the Jews were defined as demons and therefore unworthy of G-D’s Grace and the Divine Covenant.

As the armies swept up and back across the land, soaking it in blood, they could not quite grasp the elusive thing they were truly after. Although they conquered the land and all had their turn to extract from Jerusalem everything that could be taken, they could not take what the Jews had been given by G-d, namely Jerusalem’s Holy Spirit.

“I am the Lord, thy G-D and you are My people.” G-D made a Covenant with the Jewish people which He has never withdrawn. Other challenging religions have said, you Jews have broken your agreement with G-D and we are the rightful heirs of the Covenant. This was followed by campaigns to elevate and separate their religions by casting the Jews as demons and thereby slaughter them with no concern for conscience. This pursuit of the Jew goes on to this very day. The demonology taught by Christianity and Islam is so deeply rooted it almost no longer needs to be taught, as it permeates each coming generation. The concept of “Jew-Hatred” or anti-Semitism was born in this crucible.

What is found as we look back in history, is a tangle of invasions wherein numerous religions, countries or superpowers such as Rome, captured Jerusalem. Often, if the ever-present Jew was  not slaughtered, he was pressed to join one or another religion. Presumably this extraordinary heritage of the Jew wherein G-D Almighty conferred His Grace through His Covenant on the Jewish people, could then be grafted onto another religion. Whether for the gods of Rome, Greece, the religions of Christianity or Islam, – if the Jew accepted the linkage of submission to another religion, this would prove the claim that the new religion was the last and only, because it now owned the direct Word of G-D. The Jews, however, never accepted other religions and were hated for this obstinacy and presumed withholding of that most precious commodity… immortality.

Christianity and Islam each put themselves forward as the more deserving religion and therefore the rightful heirs to be The Chosen people. This did not bode well for the Jews as they were pursued through the centuries with all sorts of devised cruelty, pogroms, to finally peak with a great slaughter called the Holocaust – which sadly did not yet end the pursuit.

What does all this have to do with Jerusalem? G-d designated “His Place” as Jerusalem and “His Home to be built on Har Moriah – now called Har HaBayit for G-d’s House that he ordered built there.

Simply – whatever the Jews considered valuable or spiritual, that was sufficient to make it a prize of war. Its competitors driven by religious fervor and seeking their “rightful inheritance”, believed capturing Jerusalem would convey the mystical authority each sought. Subduing one’s enemy did demonstrate certain earthly and presumably religious facts. By capturing and holding Jerusalem, the conquerors were assured they were the righteous heirs until the next conquerors ‘proved’ they were. Each would build an edifice of his religion usually directly over or near the site of the ancient Jewish Holy of Holies presently called the Temple Mount. Such religious structures were a symbolic statement to all challengers to be forewarned that it was their specific religion who controlled and was clearly blessed by G-D.

Jerusalem was the City of King David 3000 years ago. In 960 BCE King Solomon built the First Temple whose gigantic 70 ton foundation stones gave testimony to the intention of the G-D of the Jews. Jerusalem was steeped in the history of the Jews and it would be impossible to
expunge its Jewish essence, although many tried.  The First Temple was destroyed in 3338 Jewish Year. The Second Temple was built in 3408 Jewish Year in the Jewish Year/353 BCE.

In 70 CE the Romans burned the Second Temple, salted the earth so nothing would grow, exiled the Jews and renamed Jerusalem “Aeola Capitolina” and renamed the Land of Israel “Palestina” to purge the land of any Jewish presence.

In 344 CE Emperor Constantine declared himself Master of Palestine, had the Roman temple of Venus destroyed and built the Church of the Holy Sepulcher very near the Temple Mount to challenge its mystical power.

It is illogical that the Koran, the most holy book for true believers of Islam, is dealt with so casually by those who would make false claims in the name of Islam and Mohammed. The Koran is quite clear in what it says and what it doesn’t say. It speaks directly of the obligations for true believers, instructing them to pray towards Mecca five times a day. But just as clear is the ABSENCE of the word Jerusalem. Not once does the Koran mention Jerusalem nor are there any instructions to even pray in its direction nor to visit. Surely Mohammed knew what he was doing when he deliberately absented Jerusalem from his teachings. Compare that to the Hebrew Bible wherein Jerusalem is mentioned in creatively loving terms of endearment 667 times.

It was not because Mohammed was unaware of the Jews and Jerusalem. In 610 CE he had first approached the Jews offering to be their leader as the last prophet of G-d. For 19 years he instructed his followers to direct their ‘quibla’ prayers toward Jerusalem as though to sway the Jews to his teachings. But when the Jews refused to abandon their faith, he slaughtered the Jews of Mecca and Yathrib (later called Medina) and directed his followers to re-direct their ‘quibla’ towards Mecca. Jerusalem was never again venerated in prayer by Muslims. It was logical for Mohammed to adopt a city unfettered with the ancient history that Jerusalem had for the Jews. Although the Jews had lived in Mecca for centuries before Mohammed, it did not have the deep history that Jerusalem had for the Jews. Mohammed died in 632 CE.

In 683 CE Caliph Al-Walted built Al Aksa Mosque over a Christian church located on the Temple Mount. In 685-705 CE the Umayyad Caliph Abd-el Malik built the Dome of the Rock…also on the Temple Mount. This Caliph, who lived in Damascus, attempted to re-direct the Islamic compass away from Mecca towards Jerusalem and his sphere of religious/political power. The political thrust of all this was that Islam continued to ignore Jerusalem as a non-entity and worshiped toward Mecca.

The Christian Crusaders in their war against both Muslims and Jews, conquered Jerusalem in 1099 CE. On the Temple Mount’s northeast corner they built the Church of the Repose. At first the King’s Court had their residence in Al Aksa Mosque until the area was given to the Christian Knights Templar in 1100. The Knights Templar used the al-Aqsa Mosque as a training building for sword play. In the Dome of the Rock they placed a Baptistery called “The Lord’s Temple”. Again symbols of victory over the vanquished took the form of religious structures to announce in brick and mortar whose god carried them to victory.

Whether it was the Christians conquering Jerusalem or Saladin (Salah-a-Din) re-capturing the city in the name of Islam in 1189 CE, Jerusalem was a prize of war and a powerful symbol of victory over hated enemies. When Saladin, a Muslim Kurd, gathered the nomadic Arab tribes into a cohesive fighting force and drove the Christians from the land, it was the first and last time the Arabs gathered into a unit and is a mainstay of Islamic legend and heroic deeds.

In 1200 CE, after that great victory and while under Muslim rule, Jerusalem was never declared the capitol of the Muslim entity. Ramle was chosen as the capitol of the region.  Jerusalem was held in such low esteem that in 1249, the Muslim Sultan el Kamil readily gave Jerusalem away as a gift to the holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II for forming an alliance against the competing Muslim ruler el Malik. The Sultan remarked, “I have ceded nothing but churches and houses in ruins.” Frederick II was subsequently excommunicated by the Pope for making a treaty with a Muslim, since earthly sovereignty over Jerusalem was of no interest to the Church. In short, the Muslims believed they gave away nothing and the Christians believed they received nothing.

There were many indicators over the centuries that Jerusalem was not a focal point of the numerous civilizations that captured her as a prize. While Europe was immersed in the Dark Ages, 1000 years ago, Islam was enjoying the Golden Age of the Abbasid (Arab) Caliphs. They expanded and brought art, literature to Cordoba, Granada with magnificent edifices built in Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo – all to the grandeur of Islam. The city the Muslims now claim as their third most holy site was left to decay and become an extension of the desert. Jerusalem remained neglected both under Christian and Islamic domination. The hundreds of attacks against Jerusalem in the name of one god or another still go on.

Jerusalem was attacked in the ghettos of Poland, in the sweep of Germany across Europe. Even then the Axis and Allies although bitter enemies, agreed that Jerusalem (read Jews) will not rise. On the Axis side, Jews had nowhere to hide except the crematoriums. The Allies decided NOT to rescue the Jewish refugees or bomb the rail lines to the camps. The OSS knew that a live Jew being transported to a camp tied up rail equipment which could otherwise carry German soldiers and supplies to the front. Indeed, the battle for Jerusalem takes place in many forms and places. By the end of WWII, Islam was aligned with the Nazis and the Vatican assisted Nazi war criminals to escape.

The Jews dreamed and prayed to once again be sovereign in their own land with its Capitol Jerusalem, their enemies continued to capture and recapture the city…denying the Jews their dream.   Nevertheless the Jews kept trekking through history to the consternation of their foes.

While there has always been a Jewish presence in Jerusalem, and a demographic Jewish majority since 1840, the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 was the catalyst for resurgence in population.  With Jerusalem and the borders of Israel titled to the Jews by G-d according to His Torah, repossession becomes the psycho-religious equivalent of: “Whoever possesses the land, possesses the deed of the Divine Covenant as the direct conduit to G-D.”

It is now 1991. We have looked back in time to discover that, with the exception of individual sites, neither the Christians nor the Muslims ever wanted Jerusalem – except to deny it to the Jews. Only the Jews faithfully considered Jerusalem their capitol – in perpetuity. But, the war to recapture the earthly and spiritual Jerusalem goes on.

We have been told that soon after the Gulf War ends, a gathering of the nations under United Nations auspices will take place to “settle” the Arab Israeli dispute. Given the past history of the U.N. one can anticipate that the influential Arab nations with Western nations in tow, will press for punitive measures not only to legitimize their claim on Jerusalem but also to further truncate Israel.  The present war with Iraq has re-kindled age old Arab dreams of glory through unification as in 1191 when Saladin, in the name of “jihad” for Islam, drove the Christian crusaders out of Jerusalem and the entire region. While the visceral religious hate for the West remains, as frequently displayed in angry street demonstrations, nonetheless the Islamic nations with their leverage of oil can demand and receive appeasement from the Christian West. On the matter of Jerusalem, old enemies can be expected to join forces or, as often said in this region: “my enemies’ enemy is my friend”.

To further complicate matters, we find in today’s conflict that, in order to line up political support from Saudi Arabia, the Gulf Emirates, Syria and Egypt, a promise had been made by the Bush Administration NOT to exercise a veto when Israel will be coerced into this misnamed “International Peace Conference”. Presumably, within this conference Israel will be pressed by a coalition of nations to accept Arab punitive demands, including the re-division of Jerusalem or face the righteous anger of its member nations. [Remember this was written before the 1991
Madrid Conference.]

Saddam Hussein, in a hypocritical appeal to world opinion, cited his “deep concern” for the Palestinians. Regrettably, the Arab Muslim nations who have continually refused to assist their so-called brother Palestinians, will again use them to emotionally load their claim for Jerusalem. The track record “vis a vis” the Jews of European nations such as France, Germany as well as Muslim countries leaves little hope of even the pretense of fairness in what will amount to international blackmail.

In July just before the [1991] invasion, US Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie, who took orders from none other than Secretary of State James Baker III, gave Saddam the “green light” to invade Kuwait by saying to Saddam that we, the United States, are not interested in his border disputes! (Doesn’t that make Baker the midwife if not the father of this war?)

Before the war Arafat’s P.L.O. lieutenants were meeting with US Ambassador Pelletreau in Tunis to discuss peace…P.L.O. style. While speaking words of peace, the P.L.O. was concurrently coordinating with Saddam Hussein the invasion of Kuwait. Following Saddam’s invasion, the Palestinians assisted the incoming Iraqis identify every Kuwaiti official, mounted a guard over the Kuwaitis, and helped steal, rape and plunder Kuwait. Kuwaitis are now massacring the Palestinians in Kuwait. Perhaps that is why Saudi Arabia expelled all of their Palestinians to Jordan. Even Saudi Arabia, who had financed the PLO, their terrorist organization, could no longer stomach their lies. Remember that after Saddam invaded Kuwait, Jordan’s King Hussein and the PLO’s Arafat embraced Saddam and his cause.

Louis Salome reports for the COX NEWS SERVICE from Paris that two days before the October 8 Temple Mount ambush, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein met secretly in Jordan with King  Hussein and PLO leader Yasser Arafat to plan ways of heating up the Palestinians uprising. They sought to shift world attention from the Persian Gulf crisis to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Arafat was assigned the task of getting the 3 year Palestinian violence back to the front pages and provide alternative cover for Saddam’s brutal invasion. Hence, we again find Jerusalem on the front pages of every news journal and TV feature in the world, condemned by the U.N. for killing Muslims as they attempted to kill worshiping Jews. The day after the first Allied Coalition attack, Saddam began his almost nightly barrage of SCUD missiles against the civilians of Israel The US forced Israel to refrain from any defensive act and take the incoming bombs as the only Free World country under attack without fighting back. Israel was prepared to mount an air and commando attack to wipe out the mobile SCUD launchers in western Iraq early in the war. If given the codes to identify friendly forces, Israel might have effectively stopped the SCUDs before the immense damage done to Israel and perhaps before the direct hit on the Pennsylvanian Marines barracks that murdered 29 American Marines.

President George Bush in a speech to Congress ignored Israel’s cooperation but instead said that Israel must give up more land to the Palestinians to encourage the Islamic Arabs to speak trivial words of peace. Secretary of State Baker, who has shown his vituperative attitude towards Israel by refusing to set foot in that country for two years, now visits for 2 days with a subtle  ‘mandate’ to do as the US says. In fulfilling his promise to the Arab nations, the Palestinians Baker whom met with in Israel were pre-approved by the P.L.O.

We have looked back, we have observed today, now in closing let us look forward.

We hear the words “A New World Order” which to the uninformed brings a vision of a magnificent peace for all mankind. Instead, we see it intended as a trivial little plot merely to align the potentially strong nations of the Middle East in a cohesive linkage to trading partners and financial markets to the nations of the West. Clearly Kuwait was destined to lose and be absorbed by the powerful state of Iraq which we were building up as one of those privileged nations.

Israel, too, was slated to become a loser. We observe the machinations of Casper Weinberger in the mid ’80s with that same policy advanced by Baker in the ’90s. Israel would be allowed to live only as a nation on the leash of the United States in compliance with Arab demands and therefore a minimal irritant to the pathological hatred of the Arab nations. Israel was to be shaved down, with a Palestinian State at its center and Jerusalem was to be divided ‘de facto’ in a scheme to insure that the Jews had no control. But things do not always work out the way men plan them. The men who thought they could control Saddam found they could not. (These same men are now attempting to make a Faustian bargain with the other devil, Hafez al-Assad of Syria.)

War ensued and was strangely paralleled by the description in Jeremiah 50 and 51 which describes the war exactly. We observe 39 Scud missiles fall and miraculously destroy only property. This was paralleled by the saying in Isaiah 26:20,21 and 27 “Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you; withdraw for a brief while, until wrath has gone by.”

In G-d’s Covenant with the Jewish people he repeatedly stated that: “I will bless them that bless thee and curse them that curse thee.” All of the great powers who have cursed the Jewish people through their cruelty have indeed eventually been brought down. It is regretful that President Bush and Secretary of State Baker have chosen to unleash their personal bias, reminiscent of the Crusaders and the more vitriolic times of Islam toward the Jews. President Bush would be a far better leader if he retired Mr. Baker and Mr. Sununu to use his momentary popularity to act the role of a great President and not merely a hustler of multi-national oil interests.

We, indeed, need a “New World Order”, but not what is envisioned by the great shakers of business and profit. Jerusalem again becomes that litmus test as we observe the Christian West and the Islamic East join forces once again to replace the Jews in their home, Israel with its golden capitol of Jerusalem, the Eternal.

About the Author

Manny Winston, my late husband, flew from Chicago to Israel to volunteer during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. He arrived with US secretary of state Henry Kissinger’s first ceasefire on October 21; I followed on October 30th.

Manny was picking grapefruit at Kibbutz Dalia when his friend, the artists, Sol Baskin called with a permit to enter the war zone. They drove to meet Gen. Ariel “Arik” Sharon at the Suez Canal. “Shalom” Baskin was part of the Mahal volunteers from America to the IDF, and a commissioned officer in Mahal. He was Arik’s commanding officer during the 1948 War of Independence, and they remained friends.

Manny brought his two Leica cameras and photographed an outstanding photo exposé on October 29 and 30. He saw and smelled the “killing fields” He met with Sharon, the young soldiers who had survived the destroyed tanks and he saw how the blown tank turret, flipped upside down destroyed the lives of those brave souls inside.

Manny did see these effects and, because he was a true Renaissance man, a graphic thinker who was a painter, sculptor and political analyst, he envisioned a solution to the weak point of the tank. He described a technique to conquer that weakness to Sharon, who sent him to Maj.-Gen. Israel Tal, the developer of the famed Merkava tank.

Manny’s “leap of imagination” created what became “Blazer” or “Reactive” Armor. He designed rectangles of hollow metal boxes with an explosive charge inside. These ‘so-called’ “skirts” were placed around the neck of the tank turret so that when hit, the explosive charge therein would push the incoming ballistic missile out, thereby saving the tank and its crew. This was compatible with the primary goal of Gen. Tal’s Merkava tanks: Defense of the Tank Crew.

That, along with speed, maneuverability, effective shooting and protection against damaging desert sand, were what made the Merkava “The Tank a Jewish Mother Would Love,” as Manny called it.

He also designed a better bridge for crossing the Canal – easier to carry and assemble, and less susceptible to the huge holes the tanks had already created on the day’s existing bridge.

Manny continued to submit creative concepts for defense and offense to Israel’s military industries – for which he received his Israeli citizenship and security clearance. Many of his concepts and ideas were adopted throughout the years. He never asked for credit or remuneration but even today, I see his concepts being used, either in action or in military articles. Someday I hope to publish the “WINSTON DEFENSE DESIGNS,” either online or in a book – a very big book, with his original drawings.

The Yom Kippur War was a seminal turning point in Israel’s history. We did win. It was a miracle, given the forces mounted against us, in number and backed up the Soviet Union.

We have 40 mounted color photographs by Emanuel A. Winston, ready to show at a traveling or permanent exhibition, which will enhance our appreciation of what our men and generals went through and achieved.

The Yom Kippur War was also a seminal turning point in the lives of the Winston family. It was our second trip to Israel. We had tried to make Aliyah in 1962 but didn’t succeed. I made Aliyah on November 7, 1979. Manny died on June 12, 2012, and is now buried on the Mount of Olives.

I sold the home he built in Highland Park, Illinois, in August 2012, and brought his manuscripts and published papers, to the home I built in Israel in 1992. Two of our sons and their families also live in the Jewish state.

My heartfelt message for you, the reader, is to invite all my friends, family and Internet friends to come to Israel. This is where a Jew can be truly Jewish.
